Complete your manuscript.

Many aspiring authors bank on submitting sample chapters to get a book deal, but then struggle to finish their manuscript by their given deadline. It’s important to understand that while some agents and publishers may agree to take on an author’s upcoming book, many prefer to review a completed manuscript before making their decision. Before you begin seeking an agent or publisher, finish writing your story and be prepared to submit it once it’s requested. As Benjamin Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

Hire a professional editor.

When you submit your manuscript, you’re telling an agent or publisher that it’s a great story that has been professionally vetted and polished to be the best version possible. Never submit a manuscript without it being edited by a professional. No matter how good you think your story is, omitting the process of having it reviewed by an editor is the surest way to have it quickly rejected by an agent or publisher.

Intrigue through your blog.

Use your blog to attract audiences to your story, as well as intrigue agents and publishers. Brainstorm ideas for compelling blog titles that will draw readers in and create excitement about your book idea or topic. Readers of your blog will spread the word about your work, helping you to grab the attention of agents and publishers the wider your audience reach.

Leverage your social platform.

As we know in today’s world, social media is one of the best ways to get the word out about any project. Think about ways you can utilize your social platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumbler, LinkedIn, etc.) to gain support for your book. Not only will this persuade your networks to invest in your work, but also encourage agents and publishers to undertake publishing your manuscript.

Tease with an excerpt.

Publishing a short excerpt from your book, or writing a column relating to your story idea for publications is a great way to create a buzz for your book. Many agents and editors read publications seeking new talent and prospective book projects to undertake. Do your research to target specific publications that will help your story stir interest and gain visibility.

Join organizations related to your cause.

Team up with local or regional organizations related to your subject area to expand your reach and gain additional support for your book. Offer your expertise or services to help them in their efforts, thereby creating goodwill. Your assistance will be appreciated, and the favor will be returned when you need a helping hand in your book publishing efforts.

Nail your pitch.

Having a solid pitch (and an amazing story, of course) is key to hooking and landing a publishing deal. In seeking an agent or publisher, you need to be prepared to sell them on why they should choose you and publish your book. What’s captivating and exciting about your story? Why is it important? What makes it unique? Show them why they should take a chance on your book.  

Seek blurbs and testimonials.

Seek blurbs and testimonials from influencers to help you gain exposure, publicity and support for your book. Having endorsements from a business expert, coach, mentor, lecturer, organization executive or another author piques the interest of agents and publishers. Not only that, but they demonstrate your credibility and authority in your subject area.

Get on radio and TV shows.

Gaining visibility through guest appearances on local and regional radio and TV shows is an excellent way to create a buzz about your book. Additionally, booking these appearances demonstrates your authority and credibility in your subject area. Remember that news coverage and operations run 24/7 and they’re always looking for the next big story to share with their audiences.
