After you get your family, your church members and your college roommate to buy your book, then what?  How do you spread the word outside of your circle? Here are some ways to get the kind of publicity you need for success.

Set up your website.

Whether you’re in the process of writing your book or already on your way to becoming a published author, having a website or author blog is key to building your platform. As you embark on the journey to making writing your career, create a community where your readers can interact with each other about your book, attract new readers to your work, and find out about your other upcoming projects. Remember, you’re in it for the long haul.

Fine-tune your social profiles.

As an upcoming or soon-to-be published author, update your social media profiles to reflect the new direction of your professional path. Not only do you want your family and friends to know about your book, you also want to establish relationships with editors, publishers and influencers who look you up.

Be your own publicist.

Gone are the days where publishers take on the responsibility of marketing a book. Authors now need to carry out their own promotional campaign to get the word out about their work. However, rather than being a bad thing, this provides writers the opportunity to be both administrator and executor of most, if not all book marketing activities. Be strategic in your promotional plan so you can propel your book’s visibility and sales.

Pitch sizable blogs.

Approach blog owners with a large audience and demonstrate how you and your work can benefit their audience. Pitch guest blog ideas that will appeal to their audience and also encourage readers to find out more about you, what your book is about, and what you have to offer. This opens the door to you gaining new readers and turning them into loyal fans of your work.

Pitch media outlets.

In your efforts to spread the word about your book to the masses, research and target media outlets that can help make that happen. Consider local and regional magazines, newspapers, radio and TV shows. Be selective in which outlet you approach and demonstrate why they should feature you.
